A Dialogue with Dan Platt
What makes you stand out as a builder?
We are not a tract builder. I am looking for quality work everywhere. Whether it’s a renovation or we’re building a custom home from the ground up, you can be sure that my eyes are on every stage of the job, from the initial survey through the excavation, till the paint is dry. The suppliers I recommend will provide you with quality products be they bathroom fixtures, windows and doors or a custom kitchen. When the plumbers, electricians, masons, carpenters and all the other trades do their installations, we are maintaining a level of excellence in home construction on which our reputation has stood for 37 years.
When is the first time I get to see my house?
There is a very exciting moment in the construction process after the foundation is complete and the main floor is in place. The architect’s plans are lifted off the page and this is the first time you see the actual footprint of the project in three dimensions. As the framing progresses, I’ll take you on a walk-through of what will become the new rooms. I’ll show you how the doors will swing open, the position of the light switches; here’s where the fireplace will be, there the family room. Now you can even start to visualize where you’re going to place the furniture.
How will I know what gets done and when?
One of the first things we do is establish a realistic Project Schedule that details all our responsibilities and your responsibilities. Everything is laid out in an orderly fashion. And we stick to our schedule, like clockwork, because we know this is important to you. You are waiting very patiently for your new home to become a reality. From personal experience, we know what you’re going through.
Where do I fit in your schedule?
We build you into our schedule. You are involved in how the home takes shape from day one. Besides visiting the construction site you’ll be meeting the kitchen specialist, or deciding on flooring, or choosing doors and windows. We even recommend suppliers and make sure that you have sufficient time to select the finishes so that our guys can get their work done on time. We build you into our schedule so it doesn’t have to be an overwhelming experience.
What happens if I’m still living in the house?
Even if you have opted to live in your home while renovations are being done, we make sure that you are as comfortable as possible. We know there comes a time when having that makeshift kitchen in your living room wears a bit thin. I insist that our workmen always be respectful of you and your family.
Do you clean up after yourself?
Construction debris is regularly taken care of. You will not find loose boards with exposed nails lying around in the driveway. The site is broom swept every day, and at the end of every job, whether it’s a custom home or a renovation, the entire place is professionally cleaned: floors, carpets, windows, ducts, everything. We want it to be ready for all the things you have to take care of, like unpacking, arranging your new furniture, hanging pictures.
How responsive will you be to my questions?
We are available to discuss the project and answer your questions promptly all along the way. I always try to get back to you the same day or the next morning. You can be sure that we will be responsive to your needs, and provide solutions in a timely fashion. When you are ready to move in, we will provide one final walk-through with us. Chances are that ninety percent of your concerns are already on my list. Sometimes the representatives of the various trades will be there too so that you are aware of all the features of your new home.
